Instrument Overview

Image-based ML grain size estimation system with empirically calibrated uncertainty.

Measured Quantities

Grain size (mm) at each percentile of the cumulative distribution: D₂, D₅, D₁₀, D₁₆, D₂₅, D₅₀, D₇₅, D₈₄, D₉₀, D₉₅, D₉₈. For example, D₅₀ is the median grain size.

Measurement Output Format

Each value is reported as Dx ± U, where Dx is the grain size (mm) at the x-th percentile of the cumulative distribution and U is the 1σ uncertainty (mm).

Notes and Applications

• Operating range is coarse silt (~0.05mm) to coarse pebble/gravel (~32mm)
• Uncertainty reflects confidence of ML model per measurement.
• Statistical uncertainty is not a guaranteed bound; extremes may increase uncertainty.
• Optimized for low-power field operation, where instant statistics matter.
• Battery life: 8 hours.
